In kerala, the first day of the Malayalam month Medam is celebrated as Vishu. In different parts of India, the same festival is celebrated in different names. In Assam it is Bihu, in Punjab in the name Baisakhi and in Tamil Nadu Puthandu. Importance of vishu festival is that it is a festival of harvest and thus it indicates prosperity. Vishu shows the transit of sun into the Meda Raas and on the spring equinox.
Vishukkani
For a good first sight in the Vishu morning, it is a tradition to include everything that is a part of a good harvest as ‘Vishukkani’. The ritual arrangements for a Vishukkani consist of vegetables, especially mango, half cut coconut, jackfruit, cucumber, glass full rice, traditional kerala dress called set mundu, mirror, betel leaf, arecanut, gold and coins in a metal vessel called uruli.

Traditional Kerala meals is an important part of Vishu. This includes all dishes of sadya and the family members will enjoy the sadya sitting together, generally on the floor. The sadya will be served in plantain leaves with pradhaman at the end of the feast. Crackers and fireworks are other interesting part of Vishu. In kerala, crackers are most moving during Vishu than Depavali. Each family will enjoy their night with fireworks and crackers. Another significance of Vishu festival and the crackers is that it will let the whole family have a fun family time together. Vishu is the time to thank God for what we received and to wait for a more prosperous new year.
